I read the book "Of Metal and Wishes" by Sarah Fine, and really enjoyed it. The main character, Wen, is very well developed, and it was enjoyable to look at the world through her eyes. The book is a revised version of "The Phantom of the Opera", and is a really neat twist on the classic story. The author did a good job of creating a dystopian society that is different from most, not clean and white, but steampunk, in a way. Things seemed to happen too quickly in the beginning, but balanced as the story continued. Easily one of the best books I've read this year. Mac I loved this book! I actually reviewed on my other blog, The Redhead Reads, over here, resplendent with GIFs and such. So check that out if you want more detail! But overall I thought this was such a great re-telling, complete with an fresh, atmospheric setting and intriguing characters. I haven't read the second one yet but it's definitely on my to-read list! Also, here's my favorite quote from the book: “A month ago my life changed forever. Now, instead of living in a warm cottage with a lovely garden, I live on the factory compound. Instead of sitting in a kitchen and inhaling the earthy scent of stewing vegetables, I sit in a cafeteria and pick at starchy rice or thin soup shoveled from enormous vats. Instead of reading the classics, I read medical texts. Instead of the feather lightness of my mother’s touch, I feel the dry, antiseptic rasp of my father’s. Instead of embroidering silk, I embroider skin.”
