The reason I started The Thief is because almost everyone who reads it says that, even if this one was just okay but not amazing, that the rest of the series is worth it. I wholeheartedly agree. While this book was very interesting and had a beautiful plot twist at the end, the lack of dialogue bothered me. It was a good story, but feels like you really have to push through it to get to the end. The sequel, however, makes the book entirely worth it, and is a masterpiece, so I would definitely recommend reading The Thief. As I said in my review for Six of Crows, I adore stories with thieves, and this book was delightful in the way that the thief, Eugenides, was everything I had hoped for: witty, clever, and entirely human. His character is flawed and believable, and the answers to the puzzles/riddles throughout the story are not glaringly obvious, as some tend to be in literature. For a while, I was confused with the political standings of the three kingdoms in the story, but was soon straightened out after a great deal of bewilderment and rereading. I enjoyed the different cultures and landscapes of the kingdoms, and was pleasantly surprised by how the author created the religions. Over all, an amazing story and start to a series.
